If you have concerns about the size and shape of your labia, you are not alone. Whether due to childbirth, aging, or genetics, many women undergo external vaginal rejuvenation, or labiaplasty, to enhance both their physical comfort and their confidence. At our New Orleans practice, we see women who want to enhance their comfort during intimacy and others who simply want to feel better about the way this part of their body looks. At the MODERN Plastic Surgery & Medspa, Dr. Jules Walters is a top board-certified plastic surgeon who can elevate your confidence and help you feel your best with labiaplasty surgery.
On this page, you will find answers to all of your questions about labiaplasty, including how the procedure is performed, its benefits, what to expect during the recovery process, and more. You deserve to feel confident from head to toe, and we look forward to helping you achieve that goal.
Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that reduces and reshapes the labia minora—the inner lips of the vulva—to relieve discomfort and create a more balanced appearance. For many women, enlarged or asymmetrical labia can cause physical discomfort during exercise, intimacy, or even while wearing certain types of clothing. Others simply want to feel more confident and aligned with their aesthetic goals.
At the MODERN Plastic Surgery & Medspa, Dr. Jules Walters typically performs the procedure using the wedge technique, which preserves the natural edge and color of the labia for the most seamless, natural-looking result. For patients concerned about the outer lips (labia majora), nonsurgical options such as hyaluronic acid fillers can be used to restore fullness and symmetry without the need for surgery.
Whether performed on its own or as part of a more comprehensive procedure like a mommy makeover, labiaplasty is a deeply personal choice. Our goal is to help you feel informed, comfortable, and supported in making the right decision for your body.

Our goal is to empower you during the consultation process by providing all the tools you need to make informed decisions on your aesthetic journey. To that end, we take a two-step consultation approach:
Your Phone Consultation: You will start with a phone consultation with our patient care coordinator to help you get the most out of your in-person labiaplasty consultation with Dr. Walters. Our coordinator will help you uncover questions to ask the doctor and provide more information on pricing, scheduling, recovery, and other treatments that may be right for you.
Your In-Person Consultation: You will meet with both Dr. Walters and our patient care coordinator in our beautiful office space for your thorough in-person consult. Dr. Walters will evaluate your concerns in a private consultation room and have an in-depth discussion with you about your customized treatment plan. The goal is for you to be well informed and one step closer to attaining your cosmetic goals. We want to help you feel and look amazing.
Dr. Walters performs many labiaplasties in our on-site procedure room using a local anesthetic. He performs more complex procedures at a local surgery center, typically the AAAHC-accredited Houma Outpatient Surgery Center, while you are under general anesthesia.
Dr. Walters typically uses today’s most advanced labiaplasty technique, known as the wedge technique. In this approach, he cuts away a triangular area of skin and excess folds from the labia minora before stitching the tissue closed. This technique results in natural-looking results with minimal noticeable scarring. However, some patients are better candidates for the trim technique, which trims away the natural edges of the labia.

For many women, changes to the labia are more than cosmetic—they affect daily comfort and confidence. Labiaplasty can reduce excess tissue that causes discomfort in snug clothing, irritation during physical activity, or self-consciousness during intimacy. Whether changes stem from childbirth, aging, hormones, or genetics, the procedure creates a more balanced appearance and relieves associated symptoms. It can also help reduce recurrent infections or hygiene concerns by improving airflow and access for cleansing.

Labiaplasty offers both aesthetic and functional benefits, including:
Dr. Walters often performs labiaplasty as part of a mommy makeover, which offers additional benefits to women looking to reclaim their bodies after having children. This combined procedure may be right for you if you would also like to address changes to the breasts and body common after pregnancy.
The decision to pursue labiaplasty is a highly personal one, as your body is unique and there is no “correct” way for a vulva to look. However, you may benefit from the surgery if you:
Candidates should be non-smokers (or willing to quit) who are in generally good health. Dr. Walters will carefully review your medical history and goals to ensure labiaplasty is a good option for you.

Expect to return to desk work and other light daily activities within a few days. You will need to refrain from sexual activity and tampon use for at least 4 to 6 weeks to avoid irritating your treated area. Your results will begin to take shape as swelling subsides, around the 6-week mark, with final results appearing after about 3 to 6 months following your procedure.

Day 1
Return home. Expect swelling, bruising, and some soreness.
Days 2 to 3
Limit activity and take it easy. Bruising and swelling peak.
Days 4 to 7
Return to desk work and light movement.
Weeks 2 to 3
Swelling and bruising dramatically subside.
Week 4
Sutures fully dissolve. Resume sexual activity and tampon use.
Week 6

Months 3 to 6
Residual swelling subsides and your results take shape.
Our care for you continues long after you leave the office. Your recovery experience includes:

The cost of labiaplasty at our New Orleans practice varies depending on the complexity of the procedure. Because each procedure is customized, it is difficult to quote a price without discussing your unique treatment plan. After you consult with Dr. Walters, we will provide a personalized pricing estimate of your expected costs.
In most cases, labiaplasty is considered an elective cosmetic procedure and does not qualify for insurance coverage. While the surgery may relieve discomfort, insurance providers, unfortunately, do not typically recognize the procedure as medically necessary.
It is normal to experience some soreness, itching, and irritation in the initial days after labiaplasty surgery. However, Dr. Walters prescribes pain medication to keep you comfortable, which you can pick up in advance and take as soon as you arrive home. After the first week or so, you’ll likely be able to comfortably transition to over-the-counter pain medication. You can apply cool compresses to your treated area on and off throughout the day to minimize swelling and discomfort.
Labiaplasty typically does not affect sensation as it does not involve the areas of the vulva where most nerve endings are concentrated. This is especially true for the wedge technique. The main difference you’re likely to notice is increased comfort and less irritation during intimacy and physical activity.
Labiaplasty results are generally very long-lasting. The natural aging process may create normal changes to your labia over time. However, labiaplasty is generally a one-time procedure, meaning you shouldn’t need additional treatments to enjoy your results for many years to come.
